President’s message:

The Arab Chamber of Commerce & Industry wishes you a Happy Ramadan!

Ramadan Kareem

Dear Members & Friends,

No doubt that Ramadan is one of the holiest months in Islam that is given tremendous  importance in Islamic countries around the world. The most important element about Ramadan is that the Holy Quran was revealed in this month.

Ramadan is an Arabic word that means “scorching heat or dryness”. This Holy month was named Ramadan because it actually burns the sins and keeps people on the right path. Having fast is about self-control from temptations and having patience. Fasting is all about cleansing one’s soul. Fasting is to gain taqwa (clarity) and love of Allah (God).  It is compulsory for all Muslims except those who are ill or have impeding circumstances.

Ramadan is not only about fasting, Muslims need to feed the hungry, help the needy, not to judge others and forgive. That is the spirit of Ramadan!

We on this occasion would like to wish you and family a blessed Ramadan that will inspire courage and strength to help you win every challenge in life! May Allah bless your path with knowledge and good health to enlighten your hearts!

Ramadan Kareem!

Lord Edwin E. Hitti

President’s message:

The Arab Chamber of Commerce & Industry wishes you a Happy International Women’s Day!

International Women's Day 2021

Dear Members & Friends,

The Arab Chamber of Commerce & Industry wishes you a Happy International Women’s Day!

March 8 marks the “International Women’s Day” every year, a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and raise awareness about gender equality.

The idea to make the day international came from a woman called “Clara Zetkin”. She suggested the idea in 1910 at an “International Conference of Working Women” in Copenhagen. There were 100 women in attendance, from 17 countries, they unanimously agreed to her suggestion.

Throughout history, the central role of women has shaped the stability, progress and long-term development of nations. Women, notably mothers, play the largest role in the ever changing socio-economic development of societies.

“Choose To Challenge” is the theme for International Women’s Day 2021!

The Arab Chamber of Commerce & Industry wishes you a Happy New Year!

Happy New Year 2021

Dear Members and Friends,

New Year is the time or day at which a new calendar year begins and the calendar’s year count increments by one. Many cultures celebrate the event in some manner, and the 1st day of January is often marked as a national holiday. In the Gregorian calendar, the most widely used calendar system today, New Year occurs on January 1 (New Year’s Day).

Because of the division of the globe into time zones, the New Year moves progressively around the globe as the start of the day ushers in the New Year.

We on this occasion would like to wish you and yours a safe, healthy, and prosperous new year!

Sana Saaida!

Lord Edwin E. Hitti

President’s message:

The Arab Chamber of Commerce & Industry wishes you all a Happy Winter Solstice Festival (冬至快樂)!

Winter Solstice FestivalDear Members and Friends,

The Winter Solstice, Hiemal Solstice or Hibernal Solstice occurs when one of the Earth’s poles has its maximum tilt away from the Sun. It happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere.

The Winter Solstice Festival falls during the 11th lunar month. In 2020 it falls on December 21st, when the daytime will be the shortest in a year, and basically adhere the Arrival of Winter.

The Festival has its origins in the Chinese concept of Yin & Yang, which represents balance and harmony in life. It’s believed that the Yin qualities of darkness and cold are at their most powerful on the shortest day of the year, but also at their turning point to give way to the light and warmth of Yang. For this reason, the Winter Solstice Festival is a time for optimism.

Many Chinese believe that the Dōng Zhi (冬至) Festival is even bigger than Chinese New Year. It coincides with the Winter Solstice – the shortest or longest day – depending on which hemisphere you’re staying. Everyone becomes one year older on this day.

On this day, family members gather together to eat Tang Yuan (湯圓), which is a sweet syrup (boiled with pandan leaves and a few slices of ginger with glutinous rice balls. Their roundness symbolizes family unity and harmony. Traditionally, it is a big fanfare on this day. People go to temples and back home a big dinner is prepared.

We on this occasion would like to wish you all a Happy Dōng Zhì Festival!

Lord Edwin E. Hitti

President’s message:

The Arab Chamber of Commerce & Industry wishes you Happy Hanukkah!

Happy Hanukkah 2020

Dear Members and Friends,

Hanukkah means “dedication” in Hebrew. The eight-day holiday celebrates the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem after it was retaken by the Maccabees, a group of Jewish warriors, from the Greeks in the 2nd century BCE.

Similar to the Jewish holiday of Passover, Hanukkah celebrates freedom from oppression. It also supports and celebrates freedom of religious expression.

In 2020, Hanukkah begins at sundown on Thursday, December 10th, and continues through Friday, December 18th. The first candle is lit on the Chanukiah (menorah) on this date.

Families are putting health and safety first this year and plan smaller Hanukkah celebrations due to COVID-19 restrictions.

We on this occasion would like to wish all a Happy Holiday “Hanukkah Sameach!”

Chag Urim Sameach!

Lord Edwin E. Hitti

President’s

message:

International Anti-Corruption Day!

International Anticorruption Day

Dear Members and Friends,

It is quite sad that we have to celebrate Anti-Corruption Day. It is quite sad that there is corruption everywhere around us destroying our lives.

“People are right to be angry. Corruption threatens the well-being of our societies, the future of our children and the health of our planet” U.N. Secretary-General, António Guterres

History of the “International Anti-Corruption Day” starts on October 31, 2003. This day is marked as the United Nations General Assembly adopted the UN Convention against corruption. The Assembly designated December 9 as World Anti-Corruption Day to raise awareness about corruption and of the role of the Convention in battling and preventing it.

“Power never corrupts people but it is the fear of losing power that makes them corrupt”

Abuse of power or authority, in the form of “malfeasance in office” or “official misconduct” is an unlawful act, done in an official capacity, which affects the performance of official duties. Officials who utilize abuse of power are often those who exploit the ability to use corruption in their advantage.

Corruption erodes trust in government and undermines the social contract. It is a global problem that requires global solutions. Every stolen or misdirected dollar robs the poor of an equal opportunity in life and prevents governments from investing in their human capital.

“Corruption is criminal, immoral and the ultimate betrayal of public trust. It is even more damaging in times of crisis – as the world is experiencing now with the COVID-19 pandemic. The response to the virus is creating new opportunities to exploit weak oversight and inadequate transparency, diverting funds away from people in their hour of greatest need.” António Guterres

On this occasion, The Arab Chamber of Commerce & industry joins state officials, diplomats, and civil society representatives at emphasizing how corruption undermines sovereignty and security.

Business leaders need more than ever to act with ethical leadership and integrity as the worst pandemic in today’s world is actually corruption and the best remedy to cure this disease is not a vaccine, but genuine transparency.

MEMO

MEDIA RELEASE POST

WARNING RE: FAKE, FALSIFIED SUBSTANDARD MEDICAL PRODUCTS AND MEDICINES

New York, 2 April 2020 – The Transnational Alliance to Combat Illicit Trade (TRACIT) issued a statement today, warning consumers about the risks and growing availability of fake, falsified and substandard medical and healthcare products and medicines. The organization, known for mitigating illicit trade across industry sectors worldwide, reports a surge in ineffective, fraudulent products that undermine public health and efforts to stem the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Emergency response measures to protect people from the COVID-19 virus must include the urgent need to protect them from fake, falsified and substandard medical products and medicines,” said TRACIT Director-General Jeffrey Hardy. “Someone wearing a falsified or substandard surgical face mask is not only at risk of exposure, but it creates a false sense of security that can actually accelerate the spread to others.”

Worldwide reports indicate a surge in the availability and type of fraudulent medical products intended to exploit the fears of consumers, which includes illicit offerings of falsified versions of treatments such as Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin that will harm or kill already vulnerable patients. Joint operations by the World Customs Organization, Europol and Interpol have resulted in a significant increase in seizures of counterfeit and unauthorized face masks and hand sanitizers.

“Expectations are that the availability of fakes and fraudulent products on the Internet will increase dramatically, especially with the closure of retail stores and the imposition of population distancing strategies,” said Mr. Hardy. “People must be especially careful with their social media, where outright fraud and advertising of fakes is already a major problem.”

In its statement, TRACIT’s product warning list includes fake, falsified and substandard medical products such as surgical masks, hydro-alcoholic gels, testing kits and thermometers. Also listed for increased vigilance are high demand healthcare and consumer products prone to counterfeiting, including cleaning solutions, toilet paper, anti-bacterial wipes, indoor sports equipment, refrigeration appliances, food products and reading materials.

TRACIT called for immediate action by governments, law enforcement, Internet platforms and brand owners:

  • Governments to prioritize the response to fraud among COVID-19 emergency measures, allocate resources to blocking distribution of fakes, warn consumers about the risks of fake and fraudulent products, especially online sales, and impose immediate sanctions on the manufacture and sale of fraudulent COVID-19 related products.
  • Law enforcement to clamp down on violators, increase vigilance for stolen, tampered and expired medical products and medicines, and establish a coordinated national strategy to share intelligence, best practices and cooperate on cross-border investigations.
  • Internet eCommerce platforms to amplify policing and takedown of online sales of counterfeit and fraudulent COVID-19 related products.
  • Brand owners to increase security of supply chains for genuine COVID-19 related medical products and medicines, share data with law enforcement where supply chains have been compromised and raise awareness about online shopping fraud.

In the longer run, TRACIT expressed concern that the COVID-19 Pandemic underscores the urgent need for a strong international policy framework to combat the illicit trade of fake, falsified and substandard medical products and medicines.

“Once we get past this crisis, we’ll need to double our efforts to prevent counterfeiting and falsification of medical products and medicines,” said Mr. Hardy. “This must start with stronger provisions for preventing the availability of illicit products online and stronger measures to keep illicit pharmaceuticals out of the physical supply chain, including postal and express carrier infrastructures.”

covid-19

Dear Members & Friends,

We are witnessing extraordinary times as the world takes urgent steps to mitigate the impact of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic .

At The Arab Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ArabCham/Arabcci), our foremost priority is to protect the health of our members of the communities in which we live and work with.

Consequently, as of today, we are working remotely and are continuing to meet the needs of our members without interruption in full compliance with data privacy and data security protocols.

The ArabCham recognize that the Covid-19 outbreak also presents unique and often formidable business challenges for our members.

As this pandemic worsens, it is crucial during these challenging times to show our closeness and respond with concrete actions at supporting the least fortunate Arab States, their Embassies in Beijing and Consulates General in Hong Kong in providing all essential services, resources, and equipment needed to combat the Covid-19 challenge.

More specifically, Lebanon’s Health Institutions are appealing among other for Covid-19 diagnostic kits; pulmonary screening and ventilation systems; FFP2, FFP3, and N95 respirators; surgical masks, and machinery for the production of such.

If you are able to provide any of the above or have the particulars of any donors, please do not hesitate to contact us at (852) 2159 9170 or secretariat@arabcci.org.

We look forward to your support in fighting this outbreak together.

You are in our thoughts and prayers during these difficult times!
